As we know, many parts of North America deal with extremely cold weather conditions during the winter months. Many overlook the maintenance and management of DEF tanks during these freezing cold months.
DEF tanks need to be properly maintained and dispensed to preserve its quality.
DEF stands for Diesel Exhaust Fluid. It is a type of fluid that is used in vehicles equipped with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems to reduce harmful emissions. DEF is a mixture of high-purity urea and deionized water and is injected into the exhaust stream to convert harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) into harmless nitrogen gas and water vapor. It is commonly used in diesel engines, particularly in commercial vehicles and heavy machinery, to meet emissions regulations and improve air quality.
DEF’s freezing point is as low as -11°C or 12°F and can expand up to 7% larger when frozen. Imagine a full tank of DEF, in freezing winter conditions that is slowly expanding as it is freezing up - this will result in damage to your storage tank.
Because DEF fluid can freeze it is important that you do not put any additives in the tank to help it thaw. DEF must remain pure for it to work correctly. Your vehicle should start without a problem and the DEF tank has a heating element that can quickly thaw the DEF.
Mammoth Equipment & Exhausts has developed a product that helps prevent DEF tanks from freezing up. The FreezeGard blanket is an easy-to-install and cost-effective solution to help protect and prevent freezing in DEF tanks during harsh cold months.
FreezeGard Blankets are waterproof, ultraviolet-protected and are flexible from -50°C to +50°C - these blankets consist of a durable silicone cloth that will not break down or crumble over time. FreezeGard is strategically designed for use with heat trace wire meaning the insulation from the blanket coupled with the heat wire will be double protection and prevention for your DEF tanks in winter.
